Wrestling is a great activity in promoting physical fitness in today's lifestyle.

Wrestling is a great activity in promoting physical fitness in today’s lifestyle.

Wrestling is a great activity for Kids

Many boys and girls, especially in the large urban centers of America, has seen a spike in the number of reported cases of diabetes, malnourishment and overweight in recent reports by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA.

The Beat the Streets Wrestling Programs in New York City, Chicago, Columbus, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Richmond and Norfolk anecdotally observed similar experiences and comments from the parents regarding these specific health issues.

The “spike” is occurring due to a lack of resources and commitment by the Departments of Education in all major cities.

All State Departments of Education require a minimum standard of weekly minutes of physical education to be provided to all students but reluctantly, oversight has never been enforced due to many reasons, mostly budgetary.

The value of play and physical athletics has been empirically studied while every parent in America knows that their children need to be active in physical activities for not only good health but also for social and mental development as well.

Activities, physically active programs afterschool from 3-5pm is lacking and has also led to many social problems of juvenile delinquency, drop outs of school and drugs.

Usually there is little “political” will for physical education programs that has left behind far too many kids especially in the cities where over 60% of our population currently resides with immigration expanding every year.

Usually these cities have outside organizations that for years have tried to fill the gap.  Organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA, YWCA and other similar after school organizations are picking up the slack.

The programs that are able to use schools such as the Beat the Streets Program, appear to be growing quickly because of its ability to provide a great after school activity with a trained teacher/coach who can help recruit and encourage kids to attend and have fun while wrestling during the day in their school.

Wrestling is a natural sport that is for EVERYONE regardless of skill or natural ability.  Most programs are designed to be held 3 times a week for 90 minutes.  The beauty of an activity like wrestling allows all the kids to keep moving and provides more activity than is required for developing good physical fitness.  It “eats & burns calories” with a proper nutrition course as a staple to the program.

The secret is the teacher/coach. He or she, while in direct contact with the students each day can  observed students everyday in school during lunch recess or in the classroom and after school.

The interaction of a trained professional can impact and change behavior provides a unique opportunity that outside organizations do not have available in their programs.

The program does not rely on a parent or guardian bringing their children to the Y or Boys and Girls Clubs.  Not every student has a parent available at 3pm to transport their child to these organizational activities that is geared more towards recreation.

Our program is designed to instill in its participants the life skills that are necessary to succeed both in the classroom and the unique ability to build leadership skills.  Wrestling is proud of the 13 or our 44 USA Presidents with wrestling in their backgrounds.
